Equality in The Workplace

Hello everyone,

Happy Friday! I hope your week has been filled with the chances to grow, develop, in and out of work.

My name is Ilinka and you can find me on Instagram: @ilinkabeckles_va or Twitter: @ilinkabecklesva

In this blog I am going to talk about equality and tips on how you can be welcoming in the work place.

Equality is a state go being equal, treated in fairness and impartially. Allowing people to be treated equally no matter a persons sex, race, religion etc. Just simply everyone being equal no matter who they are or where they are from.

Below I’ve included a few tips of how you can make sure that you are actively treating others in your workplace equally and contributing to an equal, inclusive and open environment.

  1. Pronunciation – When asking a colleagues name at work ensure that you are learning how to pronounce their name correctly for the future as this will make sure that you know how to say their name, and help them to feel you listened as in some countries, cultures names as we know them are pronounced differently. This will allow the person to feel like you have made the effort to ask them and remember.
  2. Asking pronouns – Pronouns are a way of telling people our pronouns and how we feel towards are self. Pronouns can change for each individual but it is important to keep up to date and ask at least when we meet a person, whether this is she/her, he/them, they/them. There are many more pronouns, so whatever a persons pronouns it is important that we use someones correct pronouns as this is a way to show them that we respect them and it helps create an inclusive work environment.
  3. Celebrating – Everyone in the entire world has different religions, cultures and beliefs which means there are so many things to learn, celebrate even. We may not always be told what peoples religions and beliefs are but if we do get told this either by work colleges or friends  we have an option to celebrate these events etc. An example if it was Christmas people would stay to people Merry Christmas or gifts presents, where as say it was Eid, people could say Eid Mubarak and give gifts. It is all about learning, and celebrating everyones differences.

Why not send an email in with some ideas of how you show equality and inclusion in your work place?

As always if you have any questions about the Academy you can message us on our website, via social media or email socials@visionachievement.uk. Have a great weekend, looking forward to hearing from you all.
